Plans for the controversial redevelopment of Sydney's iconic Sirius building have been released for public consultation.

The brutalist-inspired apartment block, built in the late 1970s to provide public housing, was sold by the NSW Government to developers for $150 million last year.

The new plans reveal the building's original structure will be retained, with the addition of copper "pods" to increase the overall floor space.

The building's 79 units will be concerted to 76 boutique apartments, with commercial and retail space and a new pedestrian connection between Cumberland Street and Gloucester Walk.
